Which Dishes to Wash by Hand or Machine -- Explained

by Ronald Elias

Not sure what to wash where? That’s what we’re here for!

1. Silverware

Forks. Spoons. Knives. Little spoons. Whatever it is you eat off of, they probably get dirty quickly -- and often. That means you need to stay on top of washing them. The good news is that utensils are just an easy machine wash away. Don’t worry about cleaning these by hand.

The exception to this is sharp knives and wooden utensils ---that’s where the whole “blunt the knives” song came from, we imagine. Keep all of those out of the dishwasher.

2. Pots and Pans

From the front lines of breakfast, to the battlefield of brunch, all the way to the defenses of dinner, your pots and pans go through some of the toughest cooking environments of any appliance.

How should you reward them for their service? A nice dishwasher bath. Even better is a heavy/pot and pan setting, if your dishwasher happens to have one.

3. Plastic Things

Your plastic containers are good for a lot of things, but they do have an electric enemy: your dishwasher. Save yourself -- and your plastic containers, cups, and other storage devices -- by only washing them by hand.

4. China

If we dug a few feet into the ground every time somebody asked this question, we would have dug straight through to China by now!

No, you shouldn’t put your China in the dishwasher. The older the China, the more important it is to carefully hand wash it instead of just throwing it in the dishwasher with everything else.

5. Specialty Items

If you have any doubt on how an item will survive in the dishwasher, be safe rather than sorry! This especially goes for special cups, plates, or other memorable or commemorative items with certain designs or printing on them.

6. Refrigerator Shelving

You may not think of this one that often, but we wanted to throw a knowledge curveball your way. Dishes and kitchen utensils aren’t the only things that can go in the dishwasher.

Nope! Not at all. Save yourself some cleaning time and use your dishwasher to help keep your fridge in tip-top shape.

7. Non-Stick Things

We’ve learned this lesson ourselves -- don’t try to take the easy street down shortcut lane and wash your special, non-stick dishes. It can ruin their non-stick properties, and then you’ll just be left with a normal, not non-stick pan, and nobody wants that.

Hand washing is far from the most fun you can have in your kitchen, but sometimes it is the best way to keep things safe and clean. Everything else, well, that’s what your dishwasher is for. And if your dishwasher isn’t cleaning as it should, it’s probably time for a new one! Stop by today and we’ll help you find one that will wash all your dirty-dish worries away.
