How to Spruce Up Your Kitchen for Spring Equinox

by Dale Dauterive

Changing up your surroundings can also change your mood. Here are some design tips to bring a fresh look to your kitchen area (and your spirit).

From easily growing fresh herbs to painting a masterpiece, here are a few fun and simple ways to take your kitchen from a winter lull to a spring high.

Add Some Plants

Kitchen windowsill plants

Plants not only add a pop of color to your kitchen, but they also add oxygen. And don't let a lack of counter space get in your way, hang them up. There are plenty of planter options to fit your space, style, and aesthetic.

Another benefit of being surrounded by some greenery is that it can reduce stress and make you feel more at ease. They also reduce airborne dust, increase humidity, and naturally cool the spaces they occupy.

Add Some Art

Spring is the perfect time to add some seasonal art to your kitchen. Check your local listing for galleries or art walks. This time of year, people try to get outdoors more, which means there are plenty of occasions to check out local artists.

Thrift shops are another great resource, especially if you love that vintage look. A few small floral prints can spruce up the place.

If you are feeling adventurous, there are plenty of options for creating your own art. Paint and sip nights, where you drink wine with friends and paint, are all the rage these days. You and a group of friends could create a piece for each other.

Start Painting

One way to bring spring into your kitchen is by changing up the wall color. This is far more involved than just hanging a plant or buying some art, but if you pop open some wine, it's your very own paint and sip night!

colorful kitchen accent wall

In all seriousness, you can seriously change your space with minimal effort. By painting an accent wall or a backsplash, you can add some much-needed vibrance to your kitchen. The benefit of just changing up an area like the backsplash is you can get very experimental. It's not the whole kitchen, and you can quickly change it up again when you are tired of it.

Grow Some Herbs

Your thumb may not be green, but your kitchen can be, simply by bringing fresh herbs into the space. Fresh herbs are an essential part of healthy cooking. Their flavor compounds make it easier to lighten up on things like salt and butter while keeping the flavor. But these greens are for more than just cooking! Try muddling some cilantro in your lemonade or oregano tea when you're sick.

These days, having fresh herbs in the kitchen is simple enough. Many contraptions will do all the work for you. But if you like to DIY, you can grow your own in mason jars. You will need some jars, soil, rocks, and herb seeds. Pile in the rocks, fill the jars with soil, sprinkle in some seeds and then more soil. Set them in the windowsill, water, and watch them grow!

Feature Some Flowers

This one is a no-brainer, as nothing screams spring like fresh-cut flowers. The varying colors just pop. They can also accent your other efforts, like a newly painted backsplash or art.

On top of being pretty, the right flowers will billow the sweetest of aromas, leaving your room (and whole house) smelling fresh. If this paragraph was a commercial, this is the part where a stuffed teddy would fall into some neatly folded towels.

Sometimes, kitchen sprucing requires more than just a few flowers or vintage art. If your appliances need sprucing up too, give us a call. Our kitchen experts are happy to help!
