7 Family-Friendly Playlists to Get You Through Spring Cleaning

by Pam Silvia

Get down to business—and “get down”—with these 7 Spotify family mixes that are guaranteed to have something for everyone.

As we’re a few weeks into this “social distancing” period, it’s become increasingly difficult to justify putting off spring cleaning. It doesn’t have to be all moan and groan—make it a family affair by blasting kid-friendly hip-hop playlists from your portable speaker!

Here are a few Spotify family-friendly playlists to get you started:

1. “Disney Sing-Alongs”

Say “hakuna matata” to those daunting chores—take them in stride with an upbeat playlist of Disney songs. Composed of new-age Disney tracks (like “Remember Me” from Pixar’s Coco) and all-time favorites (like Beauty and the Beasts “Be Our Guest”), this Spotify mix is sure to charm Disney fans of all ages.

Make like the seven dwarfs and whistle while you work, but don’t forget to let your kiddos in on the fun. Enlist their help in storing winter linens, dusting the blinds, vacuuming the furniture upholstery, and disinfecting the counters.

And when the time comes, let your hair down like Frozen's Queen Elsa when she gives herself a fierce makeover and builds a fortress using her awesome ice powers. Come on, we know you know the words.

2. “Kids Party”

If your little one is less than inclined to pick up a broom (and really, whose isn’t?), this family-friendly playlist might be just enough to lure them. With feel-good mega-hits like Panic! At the Disco’s “High Hopes” and Meghan Trainor’s “Better When I’m Dancin’,” there is bound to be a dance-party intermission at some point.

While most of the playlist is composed of “Top 40” hits, parents can rest assured: there are no explicit tracks. And kiddos will be elated to recognize songs from popular family films, including Trolls, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Despicable Me 2, and The Lego Movie

So, make sure your smart portable speaker is set up, and with a simple voice command, you can open up Spotify to get the party started. “Alexa, turn it up.”

3. “Family Road Trip”

Just because you’re stuck at home for spring break, it doesn’t mean you get to miss out on the road trip tradition of singing along to music that is playing on full blast. Make a staycation out of spring cleaning with the help of this Spotify family mix

An eclectic mix featuring ABBA’s ’70s disco track “Dancing Queen,” Bon Jovi’s rock anthem “Livin’ On A Prayer,” and Taylor Swift’s dance-pop hit “Shake It Off,” this clean music playlist won’t likely compel you to skip any songs.

And remember: don’t make it all work and no play. As you’re cleaning underneath your sitting furniture, leave some space for a dance floor in the middle of the living room. Bust out your best moves, and challenge your kids to a dance battle!

4. “Pop 4 Kids”

Is your child more of a “little one” and not so much a “big kid”? Well, this “Pop 4 Kids” playlist has your back. Spring cleaning will seem like less of a, well, chore with the help of the ever-ubiquitous “Baby Shark” song and cleaned-up versions of pop hits courtesy of the youth musical group Kidz Bop. With songs as clean as your newly sparkly kitchen, this family-friendly playlist is exactly what you need to make spring cleaning a family affair.

And does your kid have a penchant for listening to the same song over and over again? Luckily, with a smart portable speaker from Sonos, you can use voice control to acquiesce your little helper’s request.

5. “Kindie”

What do you get when you combine kid-friendly sing-alongs and folky guitar? This family-friendly playlist.

Adults will get a kick out of playing familiar tunes (like The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine”) to their kids while delighting in uncovering indie covers of Disney classics. For starters, there’s an acoustic rendition of the Winnie the Pooh theme by Zooey Deschanel, a Randy Newman and Rex Orange County duet of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story and a sway-worthy Arcade Fire cover of Dumbo’s “Baby Mine.”

Is swapping your kid’s Frozen playlist for a clean music playlist containing your favorite indie artists self-serving? We’d call it the best of both worlds.

6. “Silly Songs for Kids”

Diffuse your cabin fever with a family-friendly playlist that is guaranteed to bring out your inner child. This tracklist contains songs from cartoons, including old favorites like the “F.U.N. Song” from SpongeBob SquarePants and new classics like “Bing Bong Zoo” from Peppa Pig. While this playlist may be aimed at preschoolers, the young at heart will find charm in zany contributions by venerated artists like Lin-Manuel Miranda and “Weird Al” Yankovic

Use the playlist’s bouncy tempo to your advantage, and encourage your little one to hustle to the beat of the music, whether it’s to help dust the corners of the room or replace the food in your newly cleaned refrigerator.

7. “Movie Theme Songs for Kids”

College students and office workers concur: orchestral music inspires productivity. Put this theory to the test with a kid-approved playlist of cinematic overtures to play while you clean—think John Williams’s compositions for the Harry Potter film franchise and Randy Newman’s scores for Disney Pixar films like Cars and Monsters, Inc.

Sweeten the deal with a game! If your kid can correctly identify the films associated with five back-to-back tracks, they earn a 30-minute break from cleaning.

Here’s a bonus tip: Sonos portable speakers deliver full, quality sound so that you can appreciate the soaring blare of euphonium and every drum reverberation.
